In a new six-month series called “White Lies,” CNN “As Equals” is investigating the world of skin whitening. The series aims to raise awareness of colorism, the idea that lighter skin is best, even among people of the same ethnic or racial group. The practice is often confused with racism, which refers to the discrimination that a marginalized minority group receives based on their ethnicity. CNN’s Jaya Sharma spoke with several people of color about their lived experiences of colorism and skin whitening.
